UAE: Woman duped in phone scam, court orders fraudsters to repay Dh40,900

A court in Abu Dhabi has ordered two defendants to repay more than Dh40,000 to an Emirati woman after finding they deceived her in an online scheme.

The court ruling on January 8, 2026, stated that the Al Dhafra Court of First Instance found that the two scammers obtained the money by contacting the victim by phone and falsely claiming to be government employees. They told her to download a mobile application and transfer Dh40,900 to several bank accounts. After doing so, she discovered that she had been a victim of fraud.

The defendants were convicted in absentia for acquiring property belonging to the plaintiff and sentenced to three months imprisonment with a suspended sentence and deportation from the country. No appeal was filed, and the judgment became final.

Court records show that the defendants had already been criminally convicted in a separate case. The first defendants was lodged at Bur Dubai Detention Center and the second at Al Qusais Detention Center

During the civil proceedings, the court confirmed that the defendants had received Dh22,500 and Dh18,409 respectively from the plaintiff’s account. Neither defendant had returned any portion of the money, prompting the civil claim.

The court ruled that the defendants must jointly repay the full amounts they had unlawfully obtained. Additionally, the plaintiff had sought compensation of Dh9,000 for material and moral damages. The court awarded partial compensation for material damages, recognising the financial harm caused by the fraud, but rejected the claim for moral or reputational damages, citing insufficient evidence.

The court also ordered the defendants to cover reasonable court expenses, while rejecting the plaintiff’s claim for attorney fees, as she had represented herself in the proceedings.

Is 2026 the year crypto finally moves from speculation to structural maturity?
For many people‭, ‬2025‭ ‬felt like a year the crypto market should have soared and didn’t‭. ‬Markets lagged‭, ‬prices disappointed and we started to rethink once sacred rhythms like the four year cycle‭. ‬Some analysts suggested a 5.4‭ ‬year pattern‭ (‬with hope for a final run at the bull market after all‭), ‬while others argued cycles might be replaced‭ ‬altogether by a market shaped more by institutions than solo traders‭. ‬At the same time‭, ‬by the end of the year my social media‭ ‬feeds were filled with people talking about how 2025‭ ‬was the year of the snake in Chinese zodiac‭, ‬and that in February‭, ‬we pass‭ ‬into the year of the Fire Horse‭. ‬So what if 2025‭ ‬was an important transition year‭, ‬where crypto shed its Wild West reputation like a snake sheds its skin‭, ‬in the direction of structural maturity and widespread adoption‭, ‬under the auspices of the Fire Horse’s energy‭, ‬enthusiasm and speed‭? ‬Either way‭, ‬markets are up despite geopolitical uncertainty‭, ‬an interesting development‭, ‬considering the impact of incidents in the past‭. ‬And 2026‭ ‬is shaping up to be very interesting indeed‭. ‬Here are six things I’m looking forward to‭:‬

Restaurant Review: Inside Dubai’s Michelin-starred Indian vegetarian sanctuary
Restaurant Review: Inside Dubai’s Michelin-starred Indian vegetarian sanctuary
Avatara is unlike any other restaurant in Dubai in countless ways‭. ‬This small‭, ‬unassuming spot nestled in Dubai Hills appears‭, ‬from the outside‭, ‬like your typical neighbourhood eatery‭, ‬but nothing could have prepared us for what was to come‭. ‬I have to admit‭, ‬dissimilarly to many Dubai foodies‭, ‬I knew very little about Avatara and its concept‭. ‬The restaurant is the world’s only Indian vegetarian restaurant to hold a Michelin star‭, ‬with a singular 17-course tasting menu for each guest‭. ‬They define‭ ‬themselves as‭ ‬“the reincarnation of soulful Indian food”‭, ‬utilising clean‭, ‬seasonal ingredients to produce something magical‭, ‬artistic‭, ‬and truly memorable‭.‬
